Team IZOD 17U MVP Elijah Carter accepts basketball scholarship to St
Bonaventure University
Once again this fall we are pleased that a
Sports University team IZOD 17 U player has chosen and been awarded a
scholarship to a top university. On Nov 10 Elijah Carter of our 17 U team
announced his intention to attend St Bonaventure University continue his
growth towards his academic and professional goals. And play basketball as
a member of the proud Bonnie family. What we are most proud of is Elijah
contributions to Sports University Team IZOD. Elijah was the MVP of the 17
U team. Some of his most memorable games this past season has to be the
way in which he performed against the highest competition here in state
against two very notable programs with Sports U/Team IZOD going 3-1 in
those head to head match ups. On the court Elijah is a rare combination of
superior ball handling, scoring ability with uncanny outside range and
above the rime athleticism. We are committed to Elijah and wish him
tremendous success as he grows into an outstanding young man. Below is an
interview with E. Great Job Elijah. also go to some of the links below for
other stories about Elijah.
A.
The opportunity to showcase my talents to those who had never seen me
consistently play at such a high level.
Q.
What is your fondest memory of your AAU
experience with Sports University?
A.
Coming back against Westchester Hawks down by 24 points and coming back to
lose a thriller by 1 point. I only scored 2 points in the 11st half but
turned it up in the second half with 29 points 8 threes. We lost but it
showed the team’s and my character to fight and never give up which is
what this program is all about.
Q.
What appealed to you about Sports
University?
A.
Being coached by Coach Eric, a St. Anthony’s coach and the chance to be a
leader appealed to me the most.
Q.
How has your game developed over the
past year?
A.
I have become a complete guard, much better and consistent shooter,
defender and floor general.
Q.
What made you choose St. Bonaventure?
A.
The chance to play in the Atlantic 10 and the opportunity to study
business at one of the top schools in the country were the main factors.
Q.
What do you plan on majoring in college?
A.
I plan on majoring in business to prepare myself to become an entrepreneur
and someday own my own business. That is the only way to become wealthy in
this country. Most of the leaders of Sports University are successful
outside of basketball. They set good examples.
Q.
What kind of player do you see yourself
as in college?
A.
I hope to become one of the best guards to ever play at St. Bonaventure.
Q.
You are part of a legendary program at
St. Anthony's and play for a future Hall of Fame coach. How has the
coaching and experience at St. Anthony’s helped your development as a
player and person?
A.
It forced me to become more mature and disciplined as a person and more
cerebral as a player.
Q.
What would you tell youth who are talented
athletes about the importance of academics and character?
A.
What you do outside of basketball affects what you do on the court and
will stay with you long after your playing days are over. Who instilled
this in you? My father ,my grandmother, Coach Hurley and Coach Eric of
Sports University.
Q.
Who has been instrumental in getting you to
this point and helping you through the recruiting process?
A.
My father, Coach Hurley and Coach Eric. Was the process difficult? It was
just very stressful getting calls and texts all the time.
Q.
You decided to move with your grandparents to
attend St. Anthony's what made you make such a commitment?
A.
It was important for me to become the best player I can be and I felt St.
Anthony’s was the best place for me to realize my potential.
Q.
Would you recommend the Sports
University program to other players who are looking to get to the next
level? How has Sports University helped prepare you for your senior season
and college recruiting?
A.
Yes it gave me opportunities to develop as a player and person. I am sure
I would not had these opportunities with other programs.
Q.
How has Sports University helped prepare you
for your senior season?
A.
I gained more confidence and now I trust my abilities and know how to use
them to be the most effective player I can be on the court. Q.
What would you like to do when your
basketball career is over?
A.
Initially work on Wall Street but that isn't the best place to be right
now so I would have to say own my own business of some kind.
Q. Anything else you would
like to add?
A. I just want to thank
Sports University for the opportunity to perform and compete at a high
level and show my talents.
